At the Amphitheater of Citéco - The City of Economics

Because understanding the history of economic thought is somewhat like understanding the world around us, Angie and Nono, two enthusiastic young teachers, have taken on the challenge of surfing through the history of economics. Or rather, surfing through the history of "economic thought." The Surfers of Economics take you on a journey from Aristotle and Plato to John Maynard Keynes, riding the great wave of history!

Economics has never been my strong suit. I didn’t study it in high school or during my college years, except for an exam I had to cram for, during which I tried to familiarize myself with the principles of the subject—quickly learned, quickly forgotten. Today, I only understand the mechanisms we encounter in everyday life and feel incapable of forming an opinion on economic issues at the national level or beyond. Everything seems too complex to grasp clearly.

However, attach the word "history" to any subject, and you’ve got a good chance of capturing my attention, no matter what the topic is. So, when I found out that The Surfers of Economics were offering to take us on a journey through the history of economic thought, I decided to give it a shot.

But what is economic thought? It’s the way thinkers analyze and explain how the economy works. Starting with Aristotle and Platon—who already had two very different conceptions of economics—our two surfers guide us through the discoveries of those who have theorized the discipline, whose influence is still felt today. In this theatrical creation designed by Citéco in collaboration with the Les Barbares company, you’ll meet two economics—or surfing?—teachers unlike any others. Angie and Nono take you on a journey where the most absurd second-degree humor—meant in the best way possible—sits alongside a genuine and serious effort to make the content accessible.

I really enjoyed this performance, or rather this theatrical conference as our two friendly professors called it. Both interactive and educational, it’s aimed at everyone aged 15 and up, with a lively, upbeat spirit. It’s an excellent starting point for dipping a toe into economics and perhaps sparking a desire to dive deeper into this discipline.

So, put on your flip-flops, pack one or two Hawaiian shirts, and head for the beach!
